Educational Themes
Information and Communications Technology is now an integral part of our daily classroom routines. We also use radio, television, DVD, digital camera and data projector. With the C2K network in place, this means that the pupils have wider access to more up to date hardware, software and the internet, including the use of an interactive whiteboard.
Health Education is developed through The World Around Us. We have regular visits from the school nurse and dentist, who often take part in projects with the pupils. Drugs education is now a statutory component of the curriculum and we are fortunate to have a Life Education Centre in the North Down and Ards area. We also operate a healthy eating option for pupils at breaktime, whereby pupils pay £1.50 per week and they are provided with a snack of toast, fruit and water or milk. This has proved very successful with all pupils participating.
The school received a SOS award in 2008 for its healthy break scheme.
After School Activities Y4-Y7
At present the school offers
- football
- French
- hockey
- dodgeball
The school will try its best to accommodate pupils if the demand for a particular after school club is feasible. An After School Club is also available for pupils in Years 1 to 3.
Special Community Relations Programme
A very successful cross-community link was established in 2000 with St. Joseph's PS, Tyrella with all pupils from Years 3 to 7 taking part. Activities for this year include art and sports days at Tyrella, visits to Castleward and Down Museum and a residential to the Ardnabannon Outdoor Education Centre in Castlewellan.
